Prayer for Illumination
The Charge

Lectors

In the role of lector/liturgist, you offer an important assistance and support to the pastor whose interpretation of the scripture will set the tone for the day’s worship.

Plan to meet Pastor Sandy in her office about 15 minutes prior to our service to have a prayer with her (and the choir).  You may walk in ten minutes before the service with the pastor and be seated near the pulpit in a chair for you.  The Pastor will give the welcome and greetings to the congregation.  Proceed to the pulpit for the Call to Worship.  Speak into the microphone—no more than 6 inches from your voice so all may hear you.  Adjust the microphone if necessary.  Be sure to speak loudly and enunciate clearly so we can hear you!!

Proceed to the pulpit for the prayer for illumination.  Prior to the prayer, we suggest that you say, “Please join me in the prayer for illumination.”

The scripture you will read is Acts 5:26-32.  We’d like you to read it from the NRSV Bible (pew Bible).  Introduce the first reading by only saying, “Today’s lesson is from the Acts of the Apostles, chapter 5, verses 26 to 32.”  This is an example for the text chosen here to help you….it will be a different text each week.  There will be no need to make any special statement at the close of the reading.

Finally, after singing the last verse of the closing hymn, you may go to the pulpit and give the charge.  Then walk out to join Pastor Sandy for the benediction and walk out together to greet the persons in worship.

Here are suggestions for both the prayer for illumination and the charge.  You may choose one of these, or give one of your own composed at similar length.

Thank you so much for participating in our worship service in this important role.
